Looking To Work With Us?

Postdoctoral Fellows

Persons interested in postdoctoral fellowships in the Martin Pain Lab should contact Dr. Martin directly by e-mail. Individuals with technical skills in electrophysiology and/or in vivo imaging are particularly encouraged to apply.

Graduate Students

Persons interested in obtaining a Ph.D. in the lab (note: our preference is not to train terminal Masters students) are encouraged to contact Dr. Martin for instructions on where to apply. Dr. Martin is a member of both the University of Toronto Graduate Program in Psychology and the Cell and Systems Biology Department. The application deadline for Psychology is December 1 and CSB is early February.

Undergraduate Students

The Martin Pain Lab strongly encourages 1st- and 2nd-year University of Toronto students to reach out if they are interested in gaining research experience. Students do not need to wait until their 3rd or 4th year to get involved, early engagement is highly valued and allows for long-term training in the lab.

The lab welcomes Honours Thesis, IRP, ROP, and volunteer applicants, with volunteers often joining first. Preference is given to students who have taken or plan to take Dr. Martin’s courses (PSY362 – Animal Cognition and PSY391 – Psychology of Pain).

Relevant academic backgrounds are an asset and may include:

  • Biology (cell biology, neurobiology, physiology)

  • Chemistry (organic, analytical, biochemistry)

  • Neuroscience

  • Psychology, especially cognition or learning

  • Computer science (Python, MATLAB, or data analysis)

  • Statistics or quantitative methods

  • Laboratory-based courses in life sciences

Interested students should send a CV and transcripts to Professor Martin (lj.martin@utoronto.ca
